I’ve been moonlighting as a web developer for about six years. In that time I’ve done about a dozen different sites in what seems like a dozen different frameworks. My day job is as a Unix Systems Programmer. I have experience in C, Embedded SQL/C, C++, some Java, quite a bit of Perl, some PHP (although I really don’t like it), Lisp (ELisp really), and a little Python.
I’d tried to learn Ruby a couple times, but it never really stuck. Rails is the killer app that makes learning Ruby worthwhile for me. I started a commercial site with Ruby in early April 2005. I think I’m going to be able to go live with it in June 2005. I’ve really enjoyed learning both Ruby and Rails. I particularly value the testing framework for functional tests and the clean seperation of MVC.

I’ve added a rails specific category to my blog at http://lathi.net/diary/Software/RubyOnRails . If you add ”/index.rss” you can get the RSS feed. I’m trying to write regularly about my rails experiences as I learn and develop.
I’ve got one commercial Rails project going. I’m over half-way through the project. I’ll add details when I finish. As of right now, ‘rake stats’ shows I have 1125 code LOC and 1188 test LOC.
I also participated in RailsDay?. I was part of the photo-depot team. You can read some of my project planning and post mortem at http://lathi.net/twiki-bin/view/Main/RailsDay . I’d love to see a community PhotoApp. I’m sure there are tons of people working on them.
I’ve got a couple other projects lined up, but have to finish my commercial app before I can put much into the others.
