PickAxe and PickAxe II are two books by DaveThomas and AndyHunt. They describe Ruby and a lot of the standard libraries in depth and are considered the initial introduction of Ruby to a wide audience, since Docs have been written in Japanese until then.
The name of the books stems from this heavy-duty tool that is shown on the cover. The first edition can be read as a webbased document.
